Glossary of Terms

2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz

They are simply different frequencies and each has its advantages and disadvantages. The primary differences between the 2.4 GHz and 5GHz wireless frequencies are range and bandwidth. 5GHz provides faster data rates at a shorter distance, whereas 2.4 GHz offers coverage for farther distances, but may perform at slower speeds.

Ethernet Cable

Ethernet cables connect devices together within a local area network, like PCs, routers and switches.

Mbps means megabits per second. Therefore, it indicates the speed at which data is transferred.

Stabilisers and Surge Protectors

Stabilisers and surge protectors are two similar devices used to help maintain the correct voltage for electrical devices. Stabilisers ensure that the voltage being fed to electrical devices is stable, by adjusting the provided voltage up or down to keep it at the correct levels. Surge protectors protect against electrical surges. When a surge is detected, a surge protector diverts the surge to the ground, preventing it from reaching the connected devices.

Wi-Fi router Extenders and Repeaters

These are devices that extend the Wi-Fi coverage.

Wi-Fi router

A device that enables the internet service to be accessed wirelessly.
